My question is concerning a 1997 Lumina with a V6/3.1L engine. The problem
started out with a water pump leak and the engine running warm. The engine
stalled, but was not overheated. After setting for a while I was able to
drive it home and replaced the water pump. The stalling continues to be an
issue.
There is no cooling fluid loss and the oil is clean. The car will run in
idle indefinitely and runs smooth. The electric fans are cycling on and off
as expected. But, when you drive it, after roughly 5 miles it will just
stall. Up to that point the car feels and acts as normal. The stall can
happen at regular driving speed, while accelerating or decelerating. You
can restart the car (it runs rough and backfires) and continue say another
quarter mile. Then it will stall and not start. After a cool down period
you can start the entire process over.
I replaced the ECM thinking that it may have been overheated and damaged.
This was not the issue.
Any help?

Ok, I borrowed a code reader. I am only getting one error. It is
“Crankshaft Position Sensor A CKT Range/Performance”.
All ignorance here. What is this telling me? Does the sensor need replacing
or is this indicating another issue. If it is the sensor that needs
replacing, where would I find it?
Could this actually be causing the original issue that I described? Any
help or input would be appreciated

I'm assuming the dealer would carry the product you need...I did a simple
Google Search for the error code and got lots of hits. Some with possible
problems causing this error and some simply saying replace the sensor.
Have you done this already?

it's saying that the reading the computer is getting from the crank pos
sensor is not what it expects. it could be a bad sensor or a wire rubbed
thru or grounding. most likely a bad sensor, though. good luck

The crank position sensor is easy to replace and can be picked up at most
auto parts stores. The sensor is a small cylinder on top of the crank case
at the front of the motor held on by one small screw and a plug on the top.
Takes at tops 10 minutes .
