Engine over-revving in each gear w/ no speed

Important: The following is a text only archive!
For full features; Go to Engine over-revving in each gear w/ no speed

Hi All,

5 speed manual transmission 1988 RX-7 (70K miles) over-revs (3000rpm+) in every gear without much increase in speed. I shifted normally into each gear when I eventually hit the appropriate speeds. From a stop, I got virtually no movement until RPMs exceed 3000. This same lack of response occurred across all gears. The maximum speed I achieved was about 48MPH (I might have gotten higher but didn't want to push it any further)

Any help in understanding what might be causing this and how it can be fixed is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your clutch is worn posted by  newyorker

Must reek of burnt clutch.

Can you not smell? lol. posted by  67Coronet383

it pretty much smells like burning hair. posted by  DARKtEAGLE

As funny as that is, i dont know what a burning clutch would smell like, never experienced it first-hand. I always thought it smelled horrid like new brakes do, so this guy might be in the same shoes as me. posted by  newyorker

Thanks All -- I guess it's off to the Clutch Replacement shop!

Oddly enough, I did not notice any unusual odor -- but my wife claims it certainly reeked. posted by  cc10

Why the focus on a burn't clutch plate? There's a few other things that could cause the slip. posted by  Wally

but are there any that would not be remedied in the course of a clutch changeout? (assuming clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing are replaced and flywheel is resurfaced?) posted by  dodger65

Well there's that I suppose. The RX7 has an hydraulic clutch doesn't it? posted by  Wally
