For full features; Go to Idle issues
So ever since I bought the truck (87scottsdale 350TBI) it's had a bouncing
idle when warm. Start her up cold it's fine, but once she warms up the idle
bounces around. When I go to back into a parking space hit the gas in
retreat and then the brake it sounds like it wants to stall and then fires
up.
To me it sounds like a vacuum leak, however the lines look good and the
intake manifold looks good. I've yet to try the old spray around with carb
cleaner till the idle picks up trick, but it all looks clean.
I asked my buddies and the only idea I've heard that sounds plausible is
maybe a brake booster. I'm not exactly sure where it is, somewhere around
the peddle?
Is there any real way to find out for sure if that's what it is or where?
I've already replaced the idle air control valve, ign module, ign switch.
The guy I bought it from says the plugs and wires only have 1-2000mi on
them so I don't believe it's a tune up issue. However this is the first
motor I've ever had or worked on with TBI so I'm not really sure where to
start.
My buddy from work has a '90 S10 and he says he's replaced everything to
stop his idle from bouncing so it's gotta be "a chevy thing". Any ideas
would be helpful, for the both of us.

Yes! Nice information that you have shared with us.
Thank you very much!

Chevy produced a car that hunts at idle?
Have you thought about the fact it behaves when fuel enrichment is in
progress, but plays up when it gets to temperature and the injection
reverts to normal mode? I would suspect the ignition system is probably
doing it's job.
If you don't know what a brake booster looks like, you really shouldn't be
replacing parts willy nilly and gleening advice from your equally novice
social peers.
Without being there it's hard to decipher the problem, but I would be
looking at things like fuel filter, air filter, injector clean, stuck
throttle plate, etc.
It might just be cheaper in the long run to have a mechanic run his money
grubbing hands and eyes over the engine. But then again I guess the bonding
experience between a man and his car is priceless.

The guy I bought it from said he's recently replaced the fuel filter, and
looking at it next to the new tank, I believe him. The air filter isn't
bright white, but it's still pretty new. I never really questioned the
injectors because it runs so strong with excellent response, however I
suppose some injector cleaner wouldn't hurt. As for a stuck throttle plate,
that would be inside the throttle body? How would I go about checking
it?
Now I'm not gonna bring this to a mechanic for one I don't have the extra
cash to pay $65-70/hr and for two it wont help me learn anything. You say
my friends and I are novice and that may be, but you weren't always a guru
of automotive information, everyone's gotta start somewhere y'know. That's
the exact reason why I sign on here, look around and ask questions. To see
what I can learn from others.
That's the one thing that baffles me about this site. Everytime someone
asks a question that's a little too easy to answer, or not leave the
information that's needed, everyone gets all up in arms about it. I mean,
if everyone on here was an ASE certified mechanic, no one would have to ask
questions.
DBain
come on, he wasn't that hard on you, he gave you ideas, but he just
cautioned you that without having it looked over by a professional you
might end up needlessly replacing parts, which in turn may end up costing
you more than just bringing it to a mechanic. Wally even acknowledged that
the bonding experience is priceless. In other words, parts monkeys don't
solve problems, they just eliminate possibilities.
If you think wally is tough, wait till the hobo gets on someones
case.

Well gee, I offer advice and I get the rounds of the table for it.
DBain I'm sorry I upset you, but I'm sure you can get a cream for it.
Really truely I don't know what's wrong with your car, but I just thought
some ideas might help.
Mate I'm not a guru, I'm an oracle and have been playing with cars from an
early age. The two things I have learned over the ensuing years is that 1)
symptoms are rarely caused by the most obvious reasons and 2) Cliffy is a
closet gay.
Thankyou dvdrose18 for articulating a sensible response.
