Hey there all.. i'm new here, posted in the intro section... but what happened today has really give me a headache... i came home from a drive i put it in reverse and as i let the clutch loose the car gave a wild jerk and stopped (partly cause i stepped on the brake)...

And.. now the whole gear shift system is kinda loose... no gear is in the same place... i can't even switch to reverse, i can switch to other gears but they don't feel correct.:banghead: .. I did not try to drive the vehicle since...

What could be wrong with it?? Is the transmission completely broken?? Will i be shelling out too much to get it fixed??:ohcrap: Please help me out.....:umh: posted by  StarryKnight

When you say you came home from a drive and put the car in reverse and let off the clutch, was you parking, like backing up or just putting it in reverse? posted by  SillyLights

^^^ I was backing up cause i overshot my drive way a bit..

Even the gear shift rod is now able to be moved along its axis vertically, and i hear some thumping metal sound with it. posted by  StarryKnight

Okay. What kind of car is it?

And when it did the wild jerk, did it die? posted by  SillyLights

Its a 2000 fiesta... i dint let it die as i quickly pressed the clutch fully in... posted by  StarryKnight

If the gear stick is all "floppy" it sounds like it's the linkage underneath the car that links the transmission to the gear selector. The jerk you describe sounds more like the clutch cable snapped or master cylinder (if hydraulic) gave out as you put the car in to reverse, hence why you moved suddenly. You should know if it's the clutch though, because the pedal would either be stuck to the floor, or floppy and loose (depending on whether he car has a hydraulic clutch or a cable one). I think some more info would be good.

Edit: Obviously not the clutch as I've just read you above post. posted by  Cliffy

Thanks for the re cliffy... yes the rod is all floppy... i've to move it waaay too much to put into the gears (if the they are the correct ones)... don't know why the jerk was there (it was in the backward direction tho)... possibly some prob with the clutch.... posted by  StarryKnight

If you can still find the gears eventually, it's not the linkage...I'm a bit lost now, lol...Is it hard to put in to gear when you find them? posted by  Cliffy

The movement of the rod to reach the gears is large. U can say the neutral zone has widened... When i move the rod it feels like there is a lot more moving beneath the car. Like something has detached from its place. posted by  StarryKnight

how about sticking your head under the car and taking a look around, see if there is anything obviously broken. See if something is moving that shouldn't be. posted by  dvdrose18

I think the worse has finally come to pass... i put it in reverse an hour back... the rear lights did go on.... but when i slowly released the clutch, there was only a chattering noise and no movement and i stopped right there and pressed it again fully...

I cudn't try with the forward gears as its facing a wall... so now wha...:banghead: posted by  StarryKnight

And i can't see anything under the car dvdrose18... i think i'm in for some biiig trouble... posted by  StarryKnight

Too much slop in the rubber bushes, maybe also an engine mount, but until someone gets under it's all guesswork. posted by  Wally

Hey all again... the car has been fixed!! it was the gear shift mount that had broken... the noise was just the rod striking the body... there was no movement because unknowingly i was too cautious to release the clutch for some movement to be there...:orglaugh:

The best bit... all the linings were also replaced in the gear shift link, and it feels like new now!!!

And a BIG thank you to all here with ur valuable suggestions... posted by  StarryKnight

The cause of the jerk according to the repair dudes was that the linings were all worn out cause of which the gear did not go fully into place and so caused stress on the already cracked mount thereby breaking it... posted by  StarryKnight

Glad ya got it sorted! posted by  Cliffy

Ther you go it was the rubber bushes............"linings" ppfft . what a lot of wank talk. posted by  Wally

Shut up knobhead, I was close... posted by  Cliffy

 Not only the bushes guys... the mount was broken too... posted by  StarryKnight

Yeah, but it broke, no doubt, because the "rubber bushes" were worn which placed undue stress on said mount.
