For full features; Go to Emergency Brake Doesn't Work
2002 Nissan Sentra, automatic.
Not that it's a big deal, but unless I pull the emergency brake all the way
up, the car won't stop. Even when it's pulled up all the way, it barely
holds. Is there a way I can fix this for cheap at home. It's not really
worth going to a mechanic over and I really only use it in empty lots
;).
Anybody have suggestions?

What does your manual say about adjustment?
vwhobo
It says:
Parking Brake
6 to 7 Clicks - under pulling force of 44lb (196N)
From the released position, pull the parking brake lever up slowly and
firmly. If the number of clicks is out of the range listed above, see an
authorized Nissan dealer.
I pull it up probably 10-12 clicks and it barely holds.
chris_knows
sounds like that came from your owners manual, not the repair manual.

Sounds like you're right.
I don't want to waste money on a repair manual though, because it's my
dad's car so I'm only driving it for another month or so.
chris_knows
So you wouldn't spend that small of an amount for your own father?? Shame
on you.
thefonz
$30 or your fathers safety, and you take the $30, what is this world
comming to...
Edit: just for you chris400 POSTS!!!

It's an automatic, when do you use the hand brake other than to impress
people? lol Seriously though, could that be a safety issue?
LOL 400 posts. 100 more and you can change your name thing.
chris_knows
if something bad happens to your regular brakes it could be a safety issue,
there is a reason it is called an emergency brake.
dvdrose18
Yeah but in the owner's manual it's called a "parking brake". Not once in
the entire book is it referred to as an "emergency brake". Semantics aside,
I see what you mean. I'll tell my dad to fix it though--I can barely save
money without fixing his brakes lol.

Jeezuz how hard is it to pull the console off and adjust the two cable nuts
going to the hand brake lever? It's probably mainly cable stretch, but also
check your rear brake/handbrake pads.
