For full features; Go to 1992 Ranger Won't Crank
I got a 1992 Ford Sport(ranger) 4 cylinder 2.3 liter 2 wheel drive
standard.. and suddenly today, the thing wouldn't turn over. I know its not
the battery, cause you know, when you try to start a car and the battery is
out, it clicks or the lights dim or something.. not the case here. I even
put some cables on it to jump it off, and that didn't work.. Thankfully its
a standard, I was able to push start it.. Maybe the starter is going out?
Also.. heh, Im full of auto problems this week.. Since its a standard when
I'm in 4th or 5th and I let off the gas, something under it vibrates and
rattles.. Maybe a u-joint? When I shift, I hear a clicking sound. ( I had a
friend with an 86 dodge ram that made the same sound - his was automatic
though - then his u-joint went out. )

Did you try jumping the solenoid?
DBain
Oddly enough, the truck started right up this morning... So Im not going to
worry about it until it happens again.
And on the clicking/shifting issue, its the u-joints, so I'm going to spend
about 20 bucks and just replace front and back this weekend.

It could be a relay or solenoid that is going bad, or the ignition switch,
or a loose wire. If it happens again, try giving the relay a good rap with
a sturdy object and see if that helps.

Ok, so it happened again today. I crawled under it and tapped on the
starter with a hammer.. Nothing. On the passenger side fender well, I'm
guessing thats the solenoid? where a big red wire and a big black wire go
to, is clicking.. well, will click hard when you try and start it.

SillyLights
the solenoid is the device on the starter which engages it to the flywheel
when cranking the car.

Well, whatever that was on the fender well, touching it made my stereo and
cig lighter not work anymore. But today, Im taking it up and putting
it on a rack so I can get a better look at it, plus am able to fix the
u-joints today.
SillyLights
Well, the thing on the side of the fender well was the solenoid.. Good news
to report. I replaced the starter and now thats fixed. Only cost 129.00 for
a lifetime starter and I replaced both u-joints and the clicking is gone.
Seems everything works fine.
