i have a 89 mercury cougar and im having a hard time releasing my
serpentine belt to take off my alternator to replace it....i am a girl so
not real good at this stuff i need to know where the release is and what
tools to use and how to do it..... thank you so much to anyone that can and
will help......

most belt tensioners are loosened by either using a 1/2 in powerhandle with
the square end inserted into a hole on the tensioner or by using a large
socket (either 17mm or 18 mm) on the idler pulley and pulling with a
powerhandle. If you don't have much upper body strength, it helps to use a
piece of steel pipe as a cheater or a long powerhandle.
Recommend looking up exact procedures in a Chiltons, Haynes or Ford factory
manual
